AI in Manufacturing: Real-World Executives Reveal Game-Changing Benefits with SOLIDWORKS

How leading manufacturers are overcoming challenges and harnessing AI for efficiency, productivity, and innovation

In the past, manufacturing was seen as one of the last industries that could truly benefit from Artificial Intelligence (AI). Reliant on manual labour, operator-managed equipment, and deeply entrenched processes, it wasn’t exactly the tech world’s obvious target.

But things are changing AND fast.

According to the 3DS Technology Barometer Artificial Intelligence Report, conducted by The MPI Group, AI adoption in manufacturing is not only growing but accelerating. Nearly two-thirds of manufacturers plan to spend more than 10% of their technology budgets this year on AI-enabled equipment and solutions, a clear sign that the future of manufacturing will be data-driven.

Why AI is catching on in manufacturing

The research revealed that manufacturing executives — particularly those in mid-sized companies — are increasingly intrigued (59%) and excited (60%) about AI’s potential. Over half of executives believe AI is highly applicable to key operational areas, including:

  • Warehouse and distribution – 62%

  • Procurement and purchasing – 55%

  • Performance management – 54%

  • Production – 50%

  • Workforce enablement – 47%

From quality control and supply chain optimisation to warehouse layout and workflow planning, AI applications are proving they can drive measurable gains in productivity, efficiency, and decision-making.

The challenges manufacturers must overcome

Of course, integrating AI isn’t without its hurdles. The same study identified the top three challenges slowing adoption:

  1. Technology budgets – 44%

  2. Data quality – 40%

  3. Culture and change management – 38%

To get AI right, manufacturers need more than just new software or sensors. They require clean, reliable data, a skilled workforce that can leverage AI insights, and a strategic plan to integrate AI into existing operations without disrupting production.
